Residential Design Projects

Residential design projects are not just for new homeowners or homeowners planning a total renovation of their existing homes. You may want to undertake a residential design project to renovate just one part of your home. Over time, room-by-room design projects will transform your residence into a true home that beautifully reflects your aesthetic preferences, creativity and interests.

Bathroom Design

Turn a bathroom space into a totally different room by ripping out the cabinets and tub and redesigning the space. Go high tech with the latest in minimalist appliance designs to complement a monochromatic color scheme. Or you can hearken back to the past and purchase an antique sink stand (think Tuscan country furniture or Mexican colonial) and add a modern porcelain toilet that matches the piece. The former tub space is easily transformed into a walk-in shower with a water-saving showerhead.

To make your bathroom more relaxing, consider a muted color scheme, such as pastels, whites or creams. Maureen Alley, writer for Residential Design & Build Magazine, notes you also can supply more natural light to a bathroom makeover by designing a courtyard next to the bathroom.

Living Room

If your living room has lots of heavy furniture, it might be time to open up your space with a minimalist design that creates more room for traffic flow and relaxation. A minimalist design can make room for a reading corner, a yoga/meditation corner or even a home office. Place a long piece of furniture opposite a high and narrow entertainment center, or mount a flat screen on the wall and add small shelves for DVDs and books.

Decorate the rest of the living room with a comfortable carpet (even over tile); throw pillows, and small, low tables. A wicker chaise lounge adds another space to relax without taking up much space.

Master Bedroom

Transform the bedroom space with Japanese furniture. Choose a low bed, such as a futon mattress on top of a wooden platform. Use extras in the room to make it less plain. For example, you can add wall and ceiling hangings, matching nightstands with muted lamps, a writing desk and bookshelves. Consider placing a Japanese privacy shade next to the closet to create a separate dressing area. If you didn't add a yoga or exercise space in the living room, you can use an open corner of the bedroom for the purpose. Just add a cozy carpet, throw pillows, and a low shelf for burning incense or candles. You might mount a small CD player on the wall to supply music.
